  14. Thank you for downloading the virus definition update for both Norton
  15. AntiVirus for NetWare 1.0 and 2.0. This text file describes the contents
  16. of the .ZIP file and installation procedure.
  17.  
  18. Important Note:  If your Norton AntiVirus for NetWare 1.0 is dated before 
  19. July 13, 1994 you will need to update your version. Using an older version 
  20. of the NLM with these virus definitions may cause false alarms with garbled
  21. virus names. For information on how to receive the update, please call 
  22. Customer Service at (800) 441-7234.

  24. All contents of this file have been scanned by Norton AntiVirus and
  25. are free from virus infection. The virus definition and repair data
  26. included with this update are for use by Norton AntiVirus 3.0, Norton
  27. AntiVirus for Windows 95, and the Norton AntiVirus for Netware versions
  28. 1 and 2 only. The virus definitions and repair data will not work with
  29. any other software or any earlier version of Norton AntiVirus. If you
  30. experience any trouble with this update, please contact Norton AntiVirus
  31. Technical Support using any of the methods listed in your user's manual.

  36. This update contains the following files:

  38. README.TXT     This text file contains instructions for installing the
  39.                new virus definitions
  40.  
  41. OCT95.TXT      This text file describes what's new in this update.
  42.  
  43. VIRSCAN.DAT    This data file is used by Norton AntiVirus for NetWare
  44.                1.0/2.0 to detect viruses and Norton AntiVirus 3.0 and
  45.                for Windows 95 to detect and repair viruses. This file
  46.                completely replaces the existing virus definitions in
  47.                your Norton AntiVirus directories.
  48.  
  49. VIRSCANM.DAT   This data file is used by Norton AntiVirus for Netware
  50.                1.0/2.0 to detect Macintosh viruses on network servers.
  51.                This file is not used by Norton AntiVirus 3.0 or for
  52.                Windows 95.
  53.  
  54. VIRSCAN.INF    This data file is used by Norton AntiVirus for NetWare
  55.                1.0/2.0 and Norton AntiVirus 3.0 and for Windows 95 to
  56.                display virus information, such as virus characteristics
  57.                and behavior. This file is not required to detect or
  58.                repair viruses. To view this information, use the
  59.                Virus List command in the Tools menu.

  66.                           Loading New Definitions
  67.  
  68. NOTE:The new definition files contained in this .ZIP file replace the
  69.      corresponding Norton AntiVirus for NetWare 1.0/2.0 and Norton
  70.      AntiVirus 3.0 and for Windows 95 files. Only the most recent virus
  71.      definitions are required to fully update your copy of Norton AntiVirus.

  75. To update Norton AntiVirus for NetWare 1.0/2.0 virus definitions:
  76.  
  77.      1.  Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton
  78.          AntiVirus for NetWare 1.0/2.0 is installed.
  79.  
  80.      2.  Disable Norton AntiVirus for NetWare, using either the Windows
  81.          configuration component, or at the server console using the
  82.          function keys.
  83.  
  84.      3.  Copy VIRSCAN.DAT, VIRSCANM.DAT and VIRSCAN.INF into the Norton
  85.          AntiVirus for NetWare directory.
  86.  
  87.      4.  Enable Norton AntiVirus for NetWare, using either the Norton
  88.          AntiVirus for NetWare Windows configuration component, or at
  89.          the server console using the function keys.
  90.  
  91. TIP:  If you extracted this file inside your \NAVNLM directory on the
  92.       server, then step 1 is already completed. If you extracted this file
  93.       in a different directory, copy the extracted files to your \NAVNLM
  94.       directory. If prompted to overwrite existing files, select Yes.

  101.     If your version of Norton AntiVirus 3.0 for Windows and DOS is dated
  102.     before June 9, 1995, you will need to update it using the NAV July 1995
  103.     Update in order to use these virus definitions. If you have not
  104.     updated your version, download the NAV July 1995 Update from the
  105.     Symantec BBS, Symantec's FTP site, CompuServe, or America Online.
  106.     The file is called UPDATEME.EXE and is located where the monthly
  107.     update files are normally found. Alternately, you may call
  108.     Customer Service at (800) 441-7234 to obtain the NAV July 1995
  109.     Update disk.

  114. To update Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 virus definitions:
  115.  
  116. 1)  Double-click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop.
  117.     The My Computer window opens displaying your available drives.
  118.     Double-click on the drive and then the folder where the Norton AntiVirus
  119.     application files are installed.  By default this is in the
  120.     Norton AntiVirus folder in the Program Files folder.
  121.  
  122. 2)  Double-click the drive or directory that contains the Norton AntiVirus 
  123.     Definitions Update.
  124.  
  125. 3)  Copy the following files to your Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95
  126.     application files are installed.  By default this is in the
  127.     Norton AntiVirus folder in the Program Files folder.
  128.  
  129.          VIRSCAN.DAT
  130.          VIRSCAN.INF
  131.          VIRSPWD.DAT
  132.  
  133.     For instructions on how to install the definition files from the DOS
  134.     prompt, see the additional update instructions below.

  136. 5)  Launch Norton AntiVirus, then scan your drives.
  137.  
  138.     Each update contains detection for newly discovered viruses.
  139.     Performing a virus scan will also force Norton AntiVirus to recognize
  140.     that a new VIRSCAN.DAT file is in place.
  141.  
  142. 6)  Restart your computer so that the Automatic Protect will use the
  143.     newest virus definitions.
  144.  
  145. TIP:  If you extracted this file inside the \Program Files\Norton AntiVirus
  146.       folder, then step 3 is already completed. If you extracted this file
  147.       in a different folder, copy the extracted files to the folder
  148.       containing the Norton AntiVirus application files. If prompted to
  149.       overwrite existing files, select Yes.

  154. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions:
  155.  
  156.      1.  Copy VIRSCAN.DAT, VIRSCAN.INF, VIRSPWD.DAT and VIRSPEC.TXT into 
  157.          the Norton AntiVirus 3.0 directory.
  158.  
  159.      2.  Scan a drive, directory, or file with Norton AntiVirus 3.0, in
  160.          either DOS or Windows.
  161.  
  162.          This will generate new interim files and update the automatic
  163.          protection TSR.
  164.  
  165.      3.  Reboot your computer to load the updated automatic protection
  166.          TSR.
  167.  
  168. TIP:  If you extracted this file inside your \NAV directory, (\NDW for
  169.       users of Norton Desktop for Windows), then step 1 is already
  170.       completed. If you extracted this file in a different directory, copy
  171.       the extracted files to your \NAV directory. If prompted to overwrite
  172.       existing files, select Yes.
